Increase Productivity And Stop Being Unproductive — Seven Tips

Increase Productivity By:

  1. Decide what the highest priority items are.

  2. Create a “to-do” list.

  3. Delegate your tasks by time and day.

  4. Don’t multitask.

  5. Don’t be afraid to say NO.

  6. Set deadlines.

  7. Take proper breaks and check things off.

1. Decide what the highest priority items are.

I stay organized by writing down everything I need to do. When you have everything that you can possibly think of written out on paper, you either say to yourself, “oh shit, I need to get started right now,” or “wow, this isn’t as bad as I thought, let’s tackle it right now!” Either way, you can’t really lose because you will be focused to accomplish your tasks. Next, re-write everything out on a sticky note in order of highest priority to lowest priority. Lastly, focus on the number one priority for that day and forget about all the rest until the next day. Writing everything you have to accomplish can often feel overwhelming, but it is the first step to accomplishing your tasks.

2. Increase Productivity: Create a “to-do” list

Optimize the sticky note list that you’ve created by writing out a time frame next to each item. For example, from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m., focus on your blog. It’s important for the list to stay in your sight so that it serves as a constant reminder for you, which is how this planner keeps me on track. Personally, I like to attach the daily task sticky note to the inside of my laptop. This way, every time I open it I am reminded of what else I need to be doing.

3. Increase Productivity: Delegate your tasks.

There’s no possible way that one person can accomplish everything that he or she needs to do in one day. Consequently, it’s extremely important to delegate certain tasks to certain days. I create one or two big items of the day in order to ensure that those definitely get accomplished. You will become overwhelmed with everything you have to do if you do not delegate your tasks accordingly. On top of this, you may actually end up accomplishing nothing because you are not specific enough.

4. Increase Productivity: Do Not Multitask!

This one is HUGE for me. My mind loves to wander around and think about something else while I’m trying to get something done. Usually, I’ll open up ten different tabs on my laptop and hop around from one thing to another; however, this is TERRIBLE for productivity. Instead, if I dedicate all of my attention to just one thing, I actually accomplish it sooner. As a result, I feel better about myself and my productivity sky-rockets. On the other hand, multi-tasking divides our focus and attention. Without even realizing it, you will look at the clock when it’s 10:00 p.m. and you haven’t even been able to check one thing off your list. :/

Therefore, this is one of the most crucial and important things to remember when trying to become a more productive, boss version of yourself.

5. Increase Productivity — Say NO to Distractions.

If you know you have a lot on your plate, just make it easy on yourself and say no. I’m speaking from experience here. I have the worst FOMO (fear of missing out) in the world and if someone asked me to grab lunch or take pictures, I would drop everything and go. Let’s be honest, I’m honestly still pretty guilty of this, BUT just say no. If you commit to too many projects at once, it will ultimately affect the quality of your work.

And we all know quality > quantity.

6. Increase Productivity by Setting a Deadline.

This one seems pretty obvious, but try to set your deadlines a few days before the task actually needs to be completed. This way, you won’t be scrambling around at the last minute. I know personally for me, I work a lot better under pressure because I have that sense of urgency, so by writing deadlines next to a task that are “made up,” I still feel that sense of urgency, even though it may be a few days in advance of the real deadline. Ahhhhh.

7. Increase Productivity by Taking Breaks and Rewarding Yourself!

You deserve it. Turn up the music and take a dancing break, do a quick 30 minute workout, or just watch an episode of Beat Bobby Flay. If you’re too hard on yourself, you will burn yourself out. Honestly, I’ve experienced this multiple times and it feels like the world is crashing down, but then you get over it and realize that YOU made yourself feel that way. By putting too much pressure on yourself, you may give yourself anxiety. So, stop taking life so seriously and just reward yourself every time you cross something off that list.

Improve Productivity by Taking Action.

One planner that makes it super easy to stay focused and motivated is the Colvud planner, available on Amazon (see link below). This planner is seriously my life right now. It functions sort of like a bullet journal, where it prompts you to write things down. Some of the boxes include a quote of the day, goal of the day, focus for the day, what you’re grateful for, today’s top priorities, and a schedule for yourself.

If you’re anything like me, you have tried and tested various different planners/calendars/organizers before and you have probably given up on using it within a few weeks.

However, I’ve been using this one for a few weeks now and it has seriously helped me get my sh** together so much. Further, it hasn’t just helped me to stay on top of tasks that I “have to do,” but it has helped me in other ways as well. Every day, I’m reminded to be grateful for what I have. And now, I’m able to stay focused on the goals that I’ve set for myself that week.
